Endurance...

Well I have one more skills test to pass and that's my endurance test. I have to do 20 laps in 5 minutes. I really want this. I know I can do this. But then there's the doubt that keeps creeping up in me calling me a failure like it has my whole life, telling me that I'm no good. Whispering in my ear that I'll never make it and everyone will make fun of you for not doing it. Well I guess I just need to wave my fist in failures face and tell it to F off!!! I need to build my confidence and say, come on Steph, you can do this, have faith!!! What have you been practicing for? Look how far you've come. When you started, you could barely skate across the rink. Now you're doing strides, pace lines, packs, hops, (which by the way do suck), crossovers, (not well, but your doing them), you've come a long way and in just 2 months.

When I get my laps done, I'm eligible for the draft which is November 8th. YEAH!!!! I have my name picked out. We have to have 2 and so far I only have 1. Right now I have the name Eileen Dover and I think I'm going to go with #925 only cause that's my month and date of birth or I could do #489 which is the month and year Brian and I got married. Hmmmmm, decisions, decisions. I need help figuring out a second name. Although, I've kind of thought of Flamin' Cherry Diablo!! I know dorky. Hmmmm!!!

Until next time!!!

Last nights practice...

Practice last night was a killer. We had 4 stations set up. Station 1 was the hip bump. That's where you want to eventually take over your opponent by bumping them with your hip. You get real close to them and cross your leg over theirs them bump their thigh with your hip and try to knock them over or at least out of the way. Station 2 was the whip it. Yep, just like the movie. That's where you have your jammer and she grabs your arm and you basically give her a toss and it gives her some momentum and speed. Station 3 was blocking. Make sure you're in your derby stance and keep those elbows in girls. If you have chicken wings, you will get a penalty. Do everything in your power to keep those arms down. Station 4 was jumping. Again, keep those knees bent and jump. I personally fell both times I jumped over the cones. First time was forwards, and I bruised my hands and my boob, second time I jumped, I fell backwards on the side of my ass and hip, although, I have bruised the crack of my ass, I'm developing a bruise on my hip too. But it's all good.

I enjoyed the stations and it'll be brutal the more we do, but it's a great workout.

Take care!!!

3 weeks in...

And still alive. This next week we start "hitting." I'm scared. I admit it. They had practice today, and on Sunday's it's not mandatory for "Fresh Meat" to go, but we can. I on the other hand have other commitments that I have to do so I may or may not be able to go. Anyway, I did see on Facebook that one of the girls broke her wrist today. I'm really bummed for her. I love Mollie to pieces and hate to see that she may not be able to skate this season at all.

Last practice we has that I went to was good for me though. I did do my crossovers. Yes it made me nervous, but I did them. I still need to work on them, but at least I know that I can do them. I have practice tomorrow night but we're supposed to scrimmage. Which for all those that don't know what that means, it means that we're going to start hitting each other in mock games. Yes, I'm going to get pulverized. I also need to work on getting up faster too. My legs are just so weak and I need to work on not using my hands to get up. Damn, that's a hard thing to do. UGH!!!

Anyway, that's what's going on in my Newly Dead Derby Life!!! Gotta go stretch before I go to bed, so have a good night. Peace Out!!!

3 Practices so far....

All I can say is wow!!! They are brutal for someone who is out of shape like me. LOL... I so far have bruised the balls of my hands from the falls we're learning, along with my thumbs and index fingers, and I've got a bruise on my inner right thigh. Don't know how I got that one yet, but I'm sure I'll figure it out somehow. I've also pulled my muscle in my groin area. Hurts like you know what, but I'll survive. I need to work on lunges so I can get better at getting up from a fall. My leg muscles are weak. I also need to work on balance and get my balance better on one leg for the crossovers. That kind of scares me still. I mean I haven't been on skates in over 30 years. What do you expect. I'm not young you know. But like I said, I've only had 3 practices now. We have 6 weeks of practices to get good and get on a team.

But also so far, I've met some really great gals and the veterans of the league are super great. They are very encouraging for all us "Fresh Meat" that are very unsure of ourselves. They all work side by side with us and help us with our weaknesses and show us what we can do to improve ourselves. It's very cool.

Have a great a day!!!!

"Newly Dead"

Well I'm now considered "Newly Dead" and I'm totally excited and scared at the same time. Tomorrow, 8/29/11, is my first official practice with Dead Girl Derby. I'm a 41 year old woman but I'm not the oldest either. I have a friend at work who thought I should go out for the derby with her so here I am. I suck at the moment on skates, but I'll get better. I just need a little practice. It's all good. I'm going to go today to skate with them for a while. Sunday's we "newly dead" can go and practice to but it doesn't count towards our time with them, but we can just go too to get some extra time in. I think that would be good. I need it. So this is going to be my blog on what it's like for me being a Dead Girl!!

See ya!!
